Two years ago, I began research for a book which I thought would be easy to write…it was to be a compilation of customer service stories.  Thinking it would be a “piece of cake”, I became frustrated and disappointed early when I discovered the extreme disconnect between what customers want and what most companies think these same customers want. 

Customers don’t expect perfection or zero defects; they want to be treated with values…dignity, respect, courtesy, and kindness. 

I found companies who actually provided values-based service to their customers.  These companies include LL Bean, Nordstrom, FedEx, Chick-fil-A The Ritz-Carlton, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, to name a few.  Additionally, I discovered that these same companies put emphasis on the way they treat their employees as well as their customers.  That treatment results in a clear and distinctive culture and story of each of the companies.

I have since taken the best practices of each of these companies and used their examples to create cultural changes within other companies.  I can tell you, that when implemented and practiced, changes have been dramatic.  The results are happier employees and happier customers, both of which mean bottom-line impact to the practicing companies.
